The Framework Knitters’ introductory training courses are designed to ‘fill the gap’ between university education and the needs of the UK knitting industry. Through specialist training delivered in partnership with Shima Seiki and Stoll, the world leaders in flat‑bed knitting technology, students gain hands‑on experience with industrial machinery, digital design systems and real‑world production processes. This industry‑focused learning helps prepare undergraduates for their final year of study while giving them a strong competitive advantage when entering the job market.
Structure of the Initiative
Students undertake practical training during the summer between their second and final year. The Shima Seiki course provides one week of intensive instruction in industrial knit programming using the SDS‑ONE APEX4 design system, culminating in an industry‑recognised certificate. To ensure accessibility for all institutions, an additional two‑week course is offered through Stoll in Leicester, covering yarns, digital design, machine knitting and garment finishing. Together, these courses ensure that students from universities with any level of equipment can access high‑quality, industry‑standard training.
