The Drapers' Company

The Art of Giving

More than six centuries ago a group of merchants came together to promote their trade in woollen cloth in the City of London. As their guild and fellowship grew, they made philanthropy part of the plan.

Today, the Drapers’ Company has evolved from a trade association into a grant-giving body. We are still a fellowship but now we attract people from all trades and professions, people who find delight, purpose and companionship in serving others. Our members join us to help causes they believe in, to share their expertise, and to build on centuries of experience of the art of giving.

We look after trusts left in our care and manage our investments so that we can confidently make long-term commitments to our charity partners.

Essential human need –  the provision of food, clothes, shelter, education and hope –  is always our priority.

Welcome to the Drapers’ Company. We have a long history but are as active and relevant today as ever. Our work spans education and philanthropy and the website illustrates many of the ways we make a difference. Since the 16th century we have championed education, now supporting over 30 schools, universities, colleges and conservatoires, with many Drapers’ acting as governors and mentors. We also support ex-offenders, the homeless, ex-service personnel and others in need, as well as caring for residents living in our Almshouses. We are proud of the affiliations we have with the Armed Forces and British Transport Police. Nothing we do would be possible without the dedication of fellow members of the Company and the team at Drapers’ Hall. I am very grateful for all they do to ensure we remain ‘An Enduring Force for Good’. I hope you enjoy this website and seeing how our history and members inspire our actions today.
