Despite children having access to phones, online shopping and bank cards, many children in schools aren’t receiving structured lessons on money. To this end, in partnership with City Pay it Forward, a financial literacy charity founded by Liveryman Quentin Nason, we were delighted to hold our inaugural Financial Literacy Day.
The event provided a program focusing on giving 170, year 6 Draper School pupils a safe and supportive space to start building their understanding of money. While working with over 30 volunteers, the pupils were introduced to important life skills through practical exercises and conversations with mentors.
Following a wide range of learning activities, the children then were asked to plan a weekly food shop. To help the children, a series of grocery shops sprung up in Drapers’ Hall where the children could buy their weekly food, teaching them how to determine the best way to make the most of their money. As well as the day being a huge success, happily no waste was involved as the fresh food was then given to the Harold Hill Food Bank.
