Spear is a youth employability charity working with young people aged 16–24 who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). Through intensive coaching and ongoing support, Spear helps participants overcome barriers, build confidence and develop the skills needed to secure sustainable employment or further education.
The programme is delivered in two stages: an initial six-week coaching programme (Spear Foundation), followed by up to 12 months of tailored support (Spear Career). Participants benefit from group sessions and one-to-one coaching covering CV writing, interview preparation, communication skills and resilience, alongside opportunities to engage with employers and workplace environments.
At Spear’s Bethnal Green centre, Drapers’ funding has supported the delivery of six programmes since May 2025, working with 82 young people facing a range of challenges, including unemployment, low educational attainment and mental health difficulties.
The impact of this support is clear:
- 77% of participants completed the programme
- 76% of graduates progressed into employment, education or training
- Within six months, 67% of recent participants had already secured positive outcomes
The programme also reaches those facing significant barriers, with many participants living in council housing, receiving benefits or experiencing additional challenges such as caring responsibilities or learning difficulties.
Drapers’ funding directly enables the delivery of coaching programmes, including staff costs, training and ongoing support for participants. It also helps provide access to employer visits and networks, which play a key role in raising aspirations and connecting young people to opportunities.
By supporting Spear, the Drapers’ Company is helping young people to build confidence, develop essential life skills and take meaningful steps towards long-term employment and independence.
