James’ Place

A Charity Saving the Lives of Men in Suicidal Crisis

James’ Place is a specialist UK charity that provides free, immediate and life‑saving therapy to men in suicidal crisis. With centres in London, Liverpool and Newcastle, it offers rapid, face‑to‑face help in a calm, non‑clinical environment designed to remove stigma and encourage openness.

Since opening its first centre in 2018, the charity has supported more than 2,300 men, providing crucial intervention at a moment when time and compassion are critical.Suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK, yet many of those who reach crisis have never accessed mental health services before. James’ Place exists to fill this dangerous gap by offering swift therapeutic support tailored to the individual’s situation.

Men referred to James’ Place are offered an assessment quickly, often within days. They are welcomed into a safe, warm and non‑clinical setting and begin a structured programme of one‑to‑one therapy delivered by trained clinicians. The charity uses its evidence‑based “Lay Your Cards on the Table” model, which helps men understand their crisis, navigate immediate risks and develop practical strategies for staying safe.

Support continues until each man reaches a stable point in which he feels more able to cope, make decisions and reconnect with daily life. The environment, intentionally designed to feel unlike traditional mental health services, helps men talk openly and feel genuinely heard.

impact on men in crisis

James’ Place has a transformative impact on the men it supports. Many arrive overwhelmed by sudden life pressures such as relationship breakdowns, financial strain, job loss or bereavement. Through rapid, compassionate therapy, the charity helps men stabilise their crisis, understand what is driving their suicidal thoughts, and regain a sense of control and hope.

Men report feeling safer, more resilient, and better able to manage daily life after their therapy. One service user shared:

“From the first assessment I was treated with kindness and understanding. The therapy helped me talk openly for the first time and uncover trauma I didn’t realise was affecting me. My quality of life has greatly improved — it feels as if I’ve learned how to be happy again.”
