MyBig Career

Tackling Inequality Through Careers Education

MyBigCareer is a London-based charity working to bridge the opportunity gap faced by young people from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Founded in 2013, the charity focuses on supporting students eligible for free school meals—many of whom grow up without access to career role models, work experience, or personalised guidance.

Operating in six London boroughs—Camden, Hackney, Islington, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Chelsea—MyBigCareer delivers high-impact employability programmes in partnership with over 25 secondary schools with significantly above-average levels of disadvantage.

impact on young people

MyBigCareer delivers a comprehensive programme of age‑appropriate interventions that equip young people with essential skills, professional insight, and practical guidance:
  • 1:1 Career Coaching for 285 young people (ages 14–16), offering personalised support from trained volunteer role models who help students identify strengths, explore new pathways, and increase confidence.
  • Industry Insight Days for up to 90 students (ages 15–18), providing direct exposure to leading employers, hands‑on employability workshops (CV writing, interview practice), and inspirational talks from professionals.
  • A pilot programme for 30 students focused on Essential Employability Skills, targeting communication, resilience, confidence, teamwork, and workplace readiness.
  • Feedback and reporting tools for teachers, enabling schools to track progress, demonstrate impact, and strengthen their careers provision.
  • Support for schools in areas of high need, including Tower Hamlets, Camden, and Islington, where access to employers and personalised guidance is often limited.
What makes MyBigCareer distinctive is its inclusive approach: the charity supports students based on potential, ambition, and need—not academic performance. Career pathways explored range widely, from stonemasonry and hospitality to law and private equity, ensuring that every young person can see a future that feels attainable and exciting.

proven impact

MyBigCareer uses robust monitoring tools—including student surveys, teacher feedback, and Salesforce data—to evaluate success. Findings from more than 7,000 evaluations show:
  • 90% of students have a clearer career plan
  • 88% feel more likely to achieve their future goals
  • 93% report benefiting from the support
  • 98% of teachers would recommend the programme
Teachers frequently describe MyBigCareer’s work as “transformational”, and students credit the charity with helping them envision opportunities beyond their immediate circumstances.

MyBigCareer is levelling the playing field for young Londoners by ensuring that every student—regardless of background—has access to trusted role models, practical guidance, and inspiring pathways.
