Fostering Fellowship Through Volunteering
At the Drapers’ Company, philanthropy and fellowship go hand in hand. Where we give, we also seek to build relationships—and that spirit of connection is at the heart of the Friends of the Drapers’ Almshouses (FODAH).
FODAH is a group of around 20 dedicated volunteers, drawn from among our members, who play a vital role in strengthening the link between the Company and the residents of our almshouses. Their presence brings warmth, companionship, and a personal touch to the support we offer.
What FODAH Does
Each FODAH volunteer is paired with a small group of almshouse residents, whom they visit regularly or—when circumstances require—keep in touch with through friendly phone calls. These connections provide companionship, help reduce isolation, and ensure residents feel closely connected to the broader Drapers’ community.
In addition to personal visits, FODAH volunteers organise seasonal activities and coordinate the annual residents’ outing—often to the seaside or a historic town—.
One of the highlights of the year is the Almshouses Tea Party at Drapers’ Hall, a much-loved tradition that brings residents together to enjoy the Company’s renowned hospitality. FODAH also invites residents to concerts, services at St Michael’s Cornhill, and other special events throughout the year.
Supporting Key Visits
When the Master and Wardens visit the almshouses, FODAH volunteers are on hand to ensure that both residents and Company representatives have a warm and meaningful experience. Their involvement helps to make these visits personal, memorable, and reflective of the Drapers’ long-standing values of community and care.
