Hanging in the Court and Court Dining Rooms at Drapers’ Hall is a fine set of four Louis XV Gobelin tapestries made between 1773 and 1774 in the workshops of Michel Audran and Pierre-Francois Cozette, whose signatures they bear. They tell the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece, a story that has always resonated with the Drapers’ Company.
Based on a series of cartoons painted by Jean-Francois de Troy, director of the French Academy in Rome, the tapestries were exhibited at the Louvre in the Salon of 1748 and some years later presented by Louis XVI to the Spanish Ambassador to the French Court. They were acquired by the Company at auction in 1881.
