Almshouse

Queen Elizabeth College

Queen Elizabeth College is a historic almshouse estate in Greenwich, South East London, providing high-quality accommodation for people in financial need. Founded in 1576 for the poor elderly residents of Greenwich, the College remains a key part of the Drapers’ Company’s ongoing commitment to charitable housing.

A Long-Standing Foundation

Established under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the College has supported vulnerable older people for nearly 450 years. The current buildings, dating from 1818, were constructed to continue this tradition and have been extensively modernised to meet contemporary standards.

Today, the estate includes 40 self-contained one-bedroom cottages, offering independent living in a safe and well-maintained setting.

Lambard House

Also located on the Queen Elizabeth College estate is Lambard House, built in 1967, which provides an additional 28 self-contained flats. Of these, eight have a second bedroom, allowing for greater flexibility in accommodation.

Facilities and Community Life

The almshouses are set within pleasant landscaped gardens, offering a peaceful and attractive environment. Residents have access to shared facilities including a community hall, chapel, and laundry, supporting both practical needs and social connection.

An active residents’ social club, organised by the community itself, hosts regular activities and outings, contributing to a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.

Eligibility and Support

Accommodation is prioritised for people of limited financial means who are able to demonstrate a genuine housing need. The estate is owned by the Drapers’  Almshouse Charity and managed by The Trust Partnership, ensuring the estate is professionally overseen and aligned with our founding charitable objectives.
