Queen Sonja Wears the Drapers’ Company Brooch

A poignant detail during the national mourning for King Harald V was Queen Sonja’s decision to wear the historic Drapers’ Company Brooch.

King Harald V’s grandfather, King Haakon VII, was presented with the Freedom of the Drapers’ Company on 16th July 1986. He then married Princess Maud, who was given the brooch. The jewel remains one of the most significant pieces in the Norwegian royal collection.

Its appearance during the tribute to the late King highlighted the enduring links between the Norwegian and British royal families and serves as a source of pride for the Drapers’ Company, whose historic gift continues to be worn and recognised more than 130 years after it was first presented.
